The trick in a nutshell
Amaze your audience by showing how the number of dots on the dice changes every time you shake the box and open it – as if the dice were living a life of their own!
Before you perform the trick for your audience, be sure to practise the shaking motion described in the following steps. It is this that makes the magic happen!
Performance
- Lay out the six dice on the table and show them to the audience. Then place the dice in the bottom of the box in order from 1 to 6 – the faces should be facing upwards. Show the audience this arrangement.
- Close the box and shake it three times (do not rotate it in your hands!). Then open the lid and show the dice to the audience (the numbers on top will be mixed up, but the numbers facing you should be in order from 1 to 6).
- Say to the audience: And now let’s go back to the previous arrangement! Close the lid of the box and shake it once. Open the box and show it to the audience. The numbers return to their original order – from 1 to 6 – because four shakes cause the dice to complete a full rotation (the original numbers will return to the top).
- Ask the audience to check the order of the numbers on the dice again. Then close the box and shake it twice. Open the lid. This time, the numbers will be in reverse order: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

How to perform
- Place the six dice at the bottom of the box, with 1 facing upwards and 2 facing you.
- Show the spectator the box from above – so that they can see the dots on the top faces, but not on the sides of the dice.
- Close the box and hold it in your hand as shown in the video. Tilt the box slightly forwards so that the dice move towards the front wall. Hold the box horizontally.
- Shake the box vigorously up and down without changing the angle of your wrist. The special design of the prop means that this ‘magical’ movement changes the numbers on the faces of the dice inside the closed box.
- When the dice touch the inside of the box, they will turn. Open the lid and show the spectator how, as if by magic, all the 1s have changed to 2s. At this point, the 6s will be facing you.

Preparing the trick
- The deck consists of 54 cards: 27 long and 27 short (all the short cards are queens of hearts), with each short card being 1 mm shorter than a long one.
- Arrange the long and short cards alternately: short – long – short – long (i.e. Queen of Hearts, regular card, Queen of Hearts, regular card, etc.).
- Each short card (Queen of Hearts) has an empty star in the top left corner of the back, which helps with identification.
- The surface of the cards has been specially treated so that the increased friction between the front of the short cards and the back of the long cards ensures they lie flush against each other. The entire deck should be arranged in the correct order – one long card, one short card.
- Before each performance, tap the deck lightly on the table to align the cards and prepare them for use.
Performance
- Arrange the deck as described in the section ‘Preparing the trick’ and tap it lightly on the table.
- Show the spectator the top card – the Queen of Hearts.
- Divide the deck into two piles, using both hands.
- Note that when splitting the deck, you will naturally reach for the longer card, so the top card of the bottom pile will also be the Queen of Hearts. Now all you need to do is move the top pile to the bottom and show the spectator the top card – it should be the Queen of Hearts – it’s magic!

Using your magical abilities, you’ll make a long stick placed in a box split into three parts in the blink of an eye. After a moment, perform another magical move and join the sticks back together, leaving your audience truly amazed.
Performance
- Show the audience a long stick and an empty box to convince them that everything is in order.
- Place the stick into the box, holding it upright – with the opening facing upwards.
- Holding the bottom of the box with your left hand, slide its middle section to the side with your right hand – the stick will ‘break apart’ into three shorter pieces.
- Pull out the three short sticks and show them to the audience – everyone will see that the long stick has disappeared.
- Put the three sticks back into the box.
- With your right hand, slide the central section so that the box returns to its original position.
- Take one long stick out of the box again and show it to the audience.

- Ask the spectator to take the card on which their finger is resting and to memorise it. The spectator is convinced that the choice is random, but in reality the chosen card will always be the Queen of Hearts.
- Ask the spectator to memorise the card and put it back in its place.
- You already know which card the spectator has chosen, but for greater effect, stack the cards and fan them out face down. Select one card from the top (remember, it must be the card with the blank star) and show it to the spectator, telling them which card it is.

- As you utter the magic spell, cast a spell on the cards and show the front of the deck again, sliding the cards with your thumb from back to front (towards the spectator). Do this in such a way that all the cards are visible to the spectator as you slide them. This ensures that only the short cards (queens of hearts) are visible as you move them, and the spectator will see that the deck contains only queens of hearts!
