The trick in a nutshell
Amaze your audience by showing how the number of dots on the dice changes every time you shake the box and open it – as if the dice were living a life of their own!
Before you perform the trick for your audience, be sure to practise the shaking motion described in the following steps. It is this that makes the magic happen!
Performance
- Lay out the six dice on the table and show them to the audience. Then place the dice in the bottom of the box in order from 1 to 6 – the faces should be facing upwards. Show the audience this arrangement.
- Close the box and shake it three times (do not rotate it in your hands!). Then open the lid and show the dice to the audience (the numbers on top will be mixed up, but the numbers facing you should be in order from 1 to 6).
- Say to the audience: And now let’s go back to the previous arrangement! Close the lid of the box and shake it once. Open the box and show it to the audience. The numbers return to their original order – from 1 to 6 – because four shakes cause the dice to complete a full rotation (the original numbers will return to the top).
- Ask the audience to check the order of the numbers on the dice again. Then close the box and shake it twice. Open the lid. This time, the numbers will be in reverse order: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
